![]() The Home Pylon Air Racing News Critical Mass Restoration Progresses Historic Day ~ The original Hawker Sea Fury T-20 that became Critical Mass, the highlly-modified Hawker Sea Fury Race 10, flown by Tom Dwelle in the Unlimited Class of Air Racing. The aircraft seen above is shown in civil markings as "D-FOTE" and later became D-COTE. The T-20s were utilized for flight training and target towing duties for the Luftwaffe. Regarding our corrections to the caption above and below... Note From Ken Dwelle: "One small correction to the first photo Mark. The registration was D-FOTE from 1958-1963 and you can read that on the bottom of the wing in the snow photo. After 1963 it was D-COTE. The other thing is that I don't think the Luftwaffe operated the Sea Furies, it was German company named: Deutsche Luftfahrt-Beratungsdienst (DLB)." Note 2 ~ Added by Thomas Genth: "Ken is right, the things are a little bit complicated ! The aircraft were bought by the German government, but operated by civil companies. At the time the D-COTE photo was taken, they worked for the Deutsche Luftfahrt Beratungsdienst (DLB). Later on it was the Rhein Flugzeugbau and actually a company called Ice Air is operating a fleet of Pilatus PC9 target tugs for the Luftwaffe doing the same thing .... But it is true, they were never official Luftwaffe aircraft and there was only one trainer and the other 16 Mk 20 were all fitted with the winch for target towing!" For more on the German Civil Sea Furys/Furies and their disposition, including those converted to Air Racing, see: Thomas Genth's Sea Fury website: http://www.thomasgenth.de/SeafuryD/indexeng.html This particular website includes the Genth family history with the Luftwaffe, including the WWII and post-War eras. Service and The Home Pylon, Present: Critical Mass Restoration Progresses The Dwelle Family and Nella Oil have been busy as of late! The restoration of Critical
Mass, Race 10, the former highly-modified Hawker Sea Fury
racer continues and progresses very well, according to
Ken Dwelle, pilot of "Kitchen Pass" in the AT-6
ranks. According to Ken, "We have been plugging away
at the restoration of the Sea Fury, we are about a year
into it now. We have located nearly all of the parts we
need and I spend my evenings and weekends rebuilding and
painting all of the components, hydraulic lines, control
tubes, etc. The fuselage is in the jig in Sanders shop
and the wing center section is also in the jig at
Powerpac in Ione." "Here are some more
photos from last week," said Dwelle, who added that
"The inside fuselage photo shows the front cockpit ~
which was skinned over on C-Mass ~ the belly skin was
removed to complete the paint stripping and it is ready
for re-skinning. The landing gear photos are a before and
after from Sunday. I stripped the leg down and sent the
big parts out for soda blasting and the small steel parts
out for nickel plating. The inside tailcone photo was
taken on Sunday prior to us stripping all the parts out
of it. It is a complete replacement tailcone that has
never been on an airplane." The Dwelle Family's Critical Mass Restoration Website: Thomas Genth's Sea Fury website: |

![]() The Home Pylon Air Racing News Critical Mass Restoration Progresses Racing Days ~ Racing Days ~ substantial modification was made to Critical Mass, which was originally raced as "Blind Man's Fluff." Jo Ann Notke was originally tapped as the pilot for the Super Sea Fury, but may have bowed out due to her own concerns in regards to the complexities presented by the modifications to the 400 mph+ racer. Skip Holm was the first to race Blind Man's Bluff and then later, raced in place of Dwelle in 1997. During the race, the aircraft blew a piston which put a sizeable hole in the starboard side engine cowling. Holm landed safely just the same. Photo: M. Daniels / ILIPS Group International |

![]() The Home Pylon Air Racing News Critical Mass Restoration Progresses Racing Days ~ Feel free to print out these photos on your home photo printers or save them on your computer hard drives. The brands have been left off so as not to distract from the image, which sadly, is the last of the inflight images you will see featuring Tom Dwelle in the Critical Mass Air Racer. Just the same, expect to see Tom soon in this very aircraft back in stock Warbird condition. The history of the aircraft itself is still being written and by one of the nicest guys, greatest families and finest crews, in Air Racing, Aviation and the Warbird movement today. Photo: M.
